Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has reacted to Christian Horner’s recent departure from Red Bull, voicing concerns over where his long-time rival might reappear in the Formula 1 landscape. In a light-hearted yet pointed comment during an interview at the Belgian Grand Prix, Wolff acknowledged Horner’s role in F1 as one of the sport’s more controversial and attention-grabbing figures. Despite their public spats over the years, particularly during intense title battles, Wolff admitted that Horner added entertainment value and wouldn’t be easily forgotten.
Wolff jokingly speculated that Horner could end up in a regulatory position with the FIA, an idea that made him visibly uneasy. He warned that if Horner resurfaced within the governing body, it could cause issues for him and possibly others. Wolff emphasized that Horner’s straightforward and unapologetically polarizing style made him stand out, describing his influence as both entertaining and impactful.
Meanwhile, Horner is expected to take a break from F1 with a “gardening leave” period before being eligible for a return in early 2026. However, speculation is already building about where he might land next. Prior to his exit, there were rumors linking him to a potential role at Ferrari, especially if the Scuderia decided to part ways with current boss Fred Vasseur.
Another viable opportunity could be with Alpine, where Flavio Briatore currently holds a leading position. The team has faced internal turmoil, including the abrupt departure of their team principal Oliver Oakes earlier this year. With Alpine languishing at the bottom of the Constructors’ Championship, a leadership shake-up could be on the horizon, and Horner’s experience might be seen as a solution to their ongoing struggles.
Should Briatore choose to step back from daily operations at Alpine, Horner could be considered as a permanent replacement to lead the team. Given his proven track record and deep F1 knowledge, many believe he’s well-equipped to steer a struggling squad back to form. With his future still uncertain, the F1 community remains watchful of where Horner’s next move will take him—and whether Wolff’s fears might become reality.
