In a move that sent ripples through the WNBA landscape, the Indiana Fever announced on Saturday the signing of free agent guard/forward Kate Martin, reuniting her with former Iowa Hawkeyes teammate Caitlin Clark.
The 6-foot-0 versatile wing, who played a key role in Iowa’s back-to-back Final Four runs, inked a one-year deal with the Fever, sources confirmed. Martin, a standout defensive player and reliable shooter during her college career, brings championship pedigree and intangibles to a Fever roster already featuring rising superstar Clark.
Fever President of Basketball Operations Kelly Krauskopf praised the addition: “Kate is a high-character player who knows how to win and compete at the highest level. Her experience playing alongside Caitlin in college gives her a unique understanding of our system, and we believe she’ll contribute immediately on both ends of the floor.”
Martin averaged 10.3 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game in her senior season at Iowa, shooting 42% from three-point range. Her ability to guard multiple positions and stretch the floor with her shooting made her a fan favorite in Iowa City, where she helped lead the Hawkeyes to the 2023 and 2024 NCAA Championship games.
The signing marks a reunion that many Fever fans have been dreaming about since Clark was drafted No. 1 overall in 2024. Clark and Martin developed a special on-court chemistry during their time together, with Martin often serving as a secondary playmaker and lockdown defender.
“I’m beyond excited to join the Fever and play with Caitlin again,” Martin said in a statement. “We shared some incredible moments at Iowa, and I can’t wait to bring that same energy and winning mentality to Indianapolis. This team has so much potential, and I’m ready to help push us toward a championship.”
Head Coach Stephanie White welcomed the move, noting Martin’s work ethic and basketball IQ as perfect complements to the young core. The Fever, who made the playoffs in 2024 but fell short in the first round, are looking to take the next step in 2026 with improved depth and experience.
League insiders suggest the deal was kept under wraps until the final hours of the signing period, adding to the surprise factor. Martin’s addition bolsters the Fever’s wing depth and provides valuable veteran presence for a roster heavy on youth.
With training camp approaching, Fever fans are already buzzing about the potential Clark-Martin connection lighting up Gainbridge Fieldhouse once again—this time in WNBA colors.
