Max Verstappen voiced his confusion after being investigated for an incident involving Lewis Hamilton during the Hungarian Grand Prix. He addressed the media following the race and emphasized that there had been no physical contact between the two cars. Verstappen questioned why the move even drew the attention of race stewards, noting that from his perspective, it was a clean piece of racing that didn’t merit any disciplinary follow-up.
The controversial moment happened on lap 30 when Verstappen made a bold move on the inside, which caused Hamilton to take evasive action and go off the track. The Dutch driver was summoned for a discussion with the stewards after the race, which lasted around 20 minutes. However, because there had been no collision or damage, the officials decided not to issue any penalties, concluding the investigation without consequences.
Reflecting on the matter, Verstappen remarked that the incident wasn’t a big deal and that even Hamilton didn’t seem to view it as serious. He mentioned that Hamilton’s post-race demeanor suggested more disappointment in his car’s performance than frustration with the overtake. Verstappen highlighted that neither driver had a particularly strong weekend and believed that the focus should be more on improving their respective team performances rather than debating racing incidents.
Verstappen speculated that Hamilton might have realized too late that he was attempting a pass on the inside, which could have led to the sudden move off-track. He believed Hamilton may have only become aware of the overtake at the last second, prompting the British driver to avoid a collision by running wide. Regardless, Verstappen stressed once more that the lack of contact made the whole issue irrelevant in his view.
Despite both drivers having a tough race—Verstappen finishing ninth and Hamilton missing out on points entirely in 12th—the Dutchman still maintains third in the championship standings with 187 points. He now trails Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, who lead the title race. Meanwhile, Red Bull Racing continues to fight for position in the constructors’ championship, sitting in fourth place overall.
