Formula 1 pundits Lawrence Barretto and James Hinchliffe have named Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas as the top contenders to lead Cadillac’s driver line-up when the team enters the championship in 2026. The American outfit is preparing for its debut under the sport’s upcoming regulations, yet it has not confirmed its drivers. Both journalists believe that Cadillac should prioritise experience, highlighting Perez and Bottas as ideal candidates, while also mentioning Mick Schumacher as a possible addition.
Cadillac’s F1 entry in 2026 will coincide with a fresh set of rules, and preparations are reportedly progressing quickly. Despite this, no official announcement has been made regarding its roster of drivers. Barretto and Hinchliffe argue that the team needs proven names capable of guiding development and performance during the early stages, particularly given the challenges that come with joining the grid for the first time in modern F1.
Sergio Perez, who lost his Red Bull seat at the end of 2024 to Liam Lawson, is eager to make a comeback — but only with the right project. Over his 14-year Formula 1 career, the Mexican has raced for Sauber, McLaren, Force India, and Red Bull, amassing six victories, three pole positions, 39 podiums, and 12 fastest laps. Barretto noted that Perez is especially drawn to Cadillac because of the resources being invested. While Perez understands the debut season won’t deliver instant glory, he sees it as a chance to use his strengths in team motivation, tyre management, and car development — skills that are in short supply among currently available drivers.
Valtteri Bottas is another veteran whose experience could prove invaluable for Cadillac. Beginning his F1 journey as a Williams reserve driver in 2010, he made his race debut in 2013 before moving to Mercedes in 2017. Partnering Lewis Hamilton for five seasons, Bottas enjoyed consistent podium finishes and contributed to multiple Constructors’ Championship wins. He later joined Alfa Romeo/Sauber for three years before taking on his current role as Mercedes reserve driver. His calm demeanour and technical feedback make him a strong candidate for a leadership role in a new team environment.
Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has already voiced his support for Bottas’s return to the grid, suggesting that his presence could greatly benefit Cadillac’s launch campaign. Both Perez and Bottas bring not only racecraft but also a deep understanding of car development and team dynamics — qualities Cadillac will likely need as it navigates the steep learning curve of its maiden F1 season.
