The 2024 Formula 1 season saw significant off-track drama, particularly between Red Bull Racing’s Christian Horner and McLaren CEO Zak Brown. The tension grew after Horner faced allegations of misconduct by a female Red Bull employee, sparking intense scrutiny across the F1 world. Although Horner denied all wrongdoing, the situation quickly escalated beyond a typical internal matter, drawing public attention and straining relationships within the paddock.
An internal investigation by Red Bull concluded with Horner being cleared of the accusations. However, the accuser filed an appeal, which was also dismissed. Despite the legal clearance, the issue remained in the public eye, especially after explicit materials allegedly linked to Horner surfaced. The renewed media focus added pressure, though another review again found Horner not guilty of any misconduct.
Throughout the controversy, Zak Brown consistently called for more transparency and accountability. He publicly criticized Red Bull’s handling of the situation, stating that Formula 1 needed to maintain its integrity and avoid scandals. His comments, while aimed at fairness, deepened the rift between him and Horner, especially when tensions spilled into the open during a press event where Horner insulted Brown, as shown in the Netflix series Drive to Survive.
The fallout from the scandal also shook Red Bull Racing internally. Jos Verstappen, Max Verstappen’s father, called for Horner’s resignation, claiming the ongoing issues distracted the team. This unrest contributed to the exit of top figures, including famed engineer Adrian Newey, raising concerns about the team’s cohesion and long-term performance heading into the 2025 season.
Despite the damage to his public image — highlighted by the boos he received during a 2025 season event — Horner managed to retain his leadership and was even honored with a CBE by King Charles for his contributions to motorsport. Surprisingly, there has been a thaw in relations with Brown, as both men were seen reconciling post-Singapore Grand Prix, hinting at a possible truce for the sake of F1’s unity and future.
