Pato O’Ward, a standout driver for Arrow McLaren in the 2025 IndyCar season, has addressed the increasing rumors surrounding his possible transition to Formula 1. The 26-year-old Mexican currently sits second in the IndyCar championship, just behind Alex Palou. While his focus remains firmly on his current campaign, his role as a test and reserve driver for McLaren’s F1 team since 2024 has kept him closely connected to the Formula 1 world, sparking continued speculation about his future.
O’Ward’s relationship with McLaren extends well beyond IndyCar. He has actively participated in various Formula 1 development activities, including simulator sessions and testing duties. Notably, he drove in Free Practice 1 at the 2024 Mexican Grand Prix, temporarily replacing Lando Norris. This high-profile appearance demonstrated his potential in an F1 setting and fueled discussions about a possible full-time promotion to the F1 grid.
Addressing the rumors, O’Ward took a measured approach, stating that although no decisions or negotiations have been finalized, he is happy with his current path in IndyCar. He reiterated his desire to continue performing well in the American series while keeping the dream of Formula 1 alive. He made it clear that while the ambition to race in F1 remains strong, any move would have to align with the right opportunity.
Importantly, O’Ward emphasized that he is not looking to join Formula 1 at any cost. If he were to make the switch, it would have to be with a competitive team capable of delivering results—not simply to fill a seat at the back of the grid. He acknowledged the differences between IndyCar and Formula 1, particularly the increased complexity of the latter, but expressed confidence in his ability to adapt.
While McLaren’s current F1 lineup of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri remains solid, upcoming changes in the driver market could present openings. O’Ward’s consistent performance in IndyCar, coupled with his marketability—especially in Mexico and North America—makes him a strong candidate for a future F1 seat. For now, he’s focused on winning the 2025 IndyCar title, but his Formula 1 ambitions remain very much alive and plausible.
