George Russell led the way in the opening practice session (FP1) of the Austrian Grand Prix, but it was McLaren junior Alex Dunne who stole much of the attention with an impressive debut. Making his first appearance in a Formula 1 session, the 19-year-old Irish driver replaced Lando Norris at McLaren and quickly made an impact. Despite FP1 typically being dominated by experienced F1 drivers, Dunne’s pace and confidence at the Red Bull Ring stood out.
Dunne, who is currently leading the Formula 2 championship, looked composed and competitive behind the wheel of the MCL39. He managed to secure the fourth fastest lap of the session, finishing just a fraction behind his temporary teammate Oscar Piastri. Only two-tenths of a second separated Dunne from George Russell at the top of the timing sheets, which highlighted the rookie’s remarkable pace. His mature handling of the car and the track earned widespread praise.
The young driver’s assured performance impressed many in the paddock. Despite the challenging nature of the Red Bull Ring and having no prior Formula 1 race experience, Dunne avoided major mistakes and demonstrated precise driving and consistency. His display has quickly sparked conversations about his future, with many already considering his potential for a full-time seat in Formula 1.
Meanwhile, other rookies were also given a chance to shine. At Ferrari, Dino Beganovic filled in for Charles Leclerc during FP1, partnering with Lewis Hamilton. Ferrari used the session to test newly developed aerodynamic parts, including an updated floor and diffuser. Hamilton, showing keen interest in the upgrades, helped assess the potential performance improvements as Ferrari looks to close the gap to the dominant Red Bull and McLaren teams.
Although George Russell ended the session as the fastest, the close margins between the top drivers indicate another tightly contested race weekend ahead. Russell appeared cautiously optimistic, knowing that FP1 times don’t always reflect the final pace in qualifying or the race. Nonetheless, the real story of the session was Dunne’s breakout performance, which has firmly placed him on the radar of teams and fans alike as a promising star of F1’s next generation.
