Ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix, Mercedes drivers George Russell and Kimi Antonelli discussed their contract situations for the 2026 Formula 1 season. Their remarks come amid persistent rumors linking Max Verstappen with a potential move to Mercedes. While speculation has surrounded Russell’s future due to supposed talks between Verstappen and Mercedes boss Toto Wolff, both Russell and the team have yet to confirm anything concrete. Russell stated the speculation has no impact on him and emphasized that he’s focused solely on performing well on track.
Russell downplayed the contract uncertainty, saying he’s not stressed about the situation and remains confident in his performance. He explained that discussions are ongoing in the background but assured there’s no cause for concern. With a solid 2025 season so far—featuring five podiums, including a win in Canada—Russell appears optimistic about remaining with Mercedes. He maintained that the best way to secure his place is by continuing to deliver strong results on track.
Despite media speculation, Russell revealed he’s not seeking other teams or exploring alternatives for 2026. He pointed out that Mercedes manages his career path and expressed faith that both he and the team are aligned in wanting to continue together. Russell added that most of the noise about his future is media-driven and reaffirmed his belief that he’ll have a spot on the F1 grid next season, whether with Mercedes or another team.
Kimi Antonelli, Russell’s rookie teammate, also addressed his future during the pre-race press conference. While his 2026 seat has yet to be confirmed, the 18-year-old Italian seems unfazed. Antonelli noted that he understands the team’s vision and has had clear communication with Wolff. His recent performance, which includes a maiden podium in Montreal, has bolstered his position as a strong contender to remain with Mercedes, especially given the team’s long-term investment in his development.
Antonelli praised the working relationship between him and Russell, highlighting the positive atmosphere within the team. He expressed confidence in Mercedes’ direction and said he felt supported by the team’s efforts. While formal announcements about contracts are still pending, both drivers made it clear they are focused on delivering results and trust Mercedes to make the best decisions for the future.
