The start of the 2025 Formula 1 Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps has been postponed due to intense rainfall that swept through the circuit. The day began with weather-related challenges, including the earlier cancellation of the Formula 3 feature race. Although the F2 race managed to proceed under improved conditions, a new wave of severe rain moved in just before the scheduled F1 race start, heavily impacting the track and forcing officials to reassess safety conditions.
Originally set to begin at 3:00 PM local time (2:00 PM BST), the race encountered a significant delay due to two major rain cells approaching from the west. These cells primarily affected critical areas like La Source and the pit straight. The cars did head out for the formation lap as initially planned, but it quickly became clear that visibility was severely compromised, even under the reduced spray caused by the safety car.
Lando Norris, who had secured pole position, voiced concerns over the low visibility, noting that despite leading behind the safety car, he could barely see anything ahead. The FIA confirmed that the majority of drivers echoed this sentiment during the formation lap, raising significant safety concerns given the high-speed nature of Spa’s layout and recent discussions about racing in wet conditions.
As a result, the race start has been officially delayed without a new fixed time. The FIA stated that the decision was made to ensure driver safety, which remains the top priority, especially in such unpredictable weather. The 44-lap race will only commence once conditions improve to a level deemed safe for competitive racing.
Fans have been directed to follow live updates via the official race blog, where further announcements regarding the evolving situation will be posted. This delay adds another layer of uncertainty to what was already expected to be a challenging and closely contested race at one of Formula 1’s most iconic and weather-prone circuits.
