Amid growing speculation about Fred Vasseur’s future at Ferrari, Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has spoken out in support of his Ferrari counterpart. Vasseur, who joined Ferrari in 2023, has recently been the subject of media criticism, particularly ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix. Vasseur himself called the speculation “disrespectful,” while both Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff have now publicly backed his leadership, emphasizing the need for stability in such a high-pressure role.
Wolff emphasized that team leaders in Formula 1 require time to make a significant impact. He compared Vasseur’s situation to that of legendary Ferrari boss Jean Todt, who took several years to lead Ferrari to championship success. Using Mercedes’ own recent challenges as an example, Wolff highlighted that even top teams experience slumps and need to allow leadership the space and time to rebuild.
He further praised Vasseur’s management style, calling him one of the best racing managers in the sport. Wolff described Vasseur as a straightforward and honest individual who avoids politics and understands the racing world deeply. He stated that if he weren’t leading Mercedes, he’d want someone like Fred running his team, underscoring the high regard in which he holds him.
