Toto Wolff has all but cemented Mercedes’ 2026 driver pairing, expressing confidence in retaining both George Russell and rising star Kimi Antonelli as Formula 1 transitions into a new regulatory era. With Max Verstappen now confirmed to remain with Red Bull beyond 2025, any speculation of a possible blockbuster move to Mercedes has been laid to rest. Wolff confirmed in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport that discussions with Verstappen had indeed occurred amid uncertainties, but his loyalty to his current lineup never wavered significantly.
While Wolff acknowledged that Verstappen’s brief availability warranted exploration, he reiterated his consistent trust in Russell and Antonelli. He revealed that although there was a 10% chance Russell could have been replaced, his position was largely secure throughout. Now that Verstappen’s plans are publicly known, Wolff emphasized that things can proceed as originally intended, signaling a return to internal stability within the Mercedes camp.
George Russell is reportedly seeking a more secure long-term arrangement, aiming for a two-year extension rather than risking another single-year deal. According to former Red Bull driver Robert Doornbos on the Pit Talk podcast, Russell is motivated to avoid being left in limbo while waiting to see if Verstappen might reconsider a move post-2026. Wolff, however, has not yet fully committed to Russell’s desired contract terms, suggesting the Briton may need to exercise some patience.
Wolff also took a moment to commend Kimi Antonelli, acknowledging the Italian rookie’s immense natural ability despite facing the challenges posed by an unpredictable and often inconsistent car. He stressed that enduring and overcoming these early career struggles is a vital component of shaping a future world champion, suggesting the team remains committed to Antonelli’s development through adversity.
Reflecting on his own trajectory, Wolff conveyed undiminished enthusiasm for his role, stating that high-pressure environments keep him engaged and invigorated. As Mercedes gears up for the dawn of a new era in 2026, he expressed excitement about leaving the current ground effect regulations behind. Looking ahead, he imagined a thrilling future rivalry—pitting Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc against his own squad of Antonelli and Russell—a scenario he views as the perfect storm for a new chapter in F1 competition.
