Oscar Piastri endured a heartbreaking start to the Australian Grand Prix after a bizarre incident forced him out of his home race before it had even begun. The McLaren driver lost control of his car shortly after leaving the pit lane, spinning at Turn 4 and colliding with the barriers. Early analysis suggested the crash was triggered by a combination of mechanical complications and driver misfortune, leaving the Melbourne crowd stunned.
The incident unfolded when Piastri’s car appeared unstable while exiting the pits, reportedly struggling with gear shifts and power delivery. As he navigated the corner on cold tyres, the car clipped the kerb and suddenly unleashed an unexpected surge of power, causing the rear to snap loose. The spin sent the McLaren sliding across the grass before crashing into the wall, damaging the front wing and tyres and effectively ending his race before the starting lights had even gone out.
Speaking afterwards, Piastri admitted he played a role in the incident but explained that irregular power delivery from the car significantly contributed to the loss of control. He described the situation as deeply frustrating, particularly given it occurred at his home Grand Prix in front of thousands of Australian supporters. The early retirement leaves him beginning the 2026 campaign on the back foot as he now turns his focus toward redemption at the upcoming Chinese Grand Prix.
