THE GRID SHIFTS: Traditional Tracks Storm Back into F1 2026/27 Calendar
LONDON — In a dramatic U-turn that has sent shockwaves through the Formula 1 community, Liberty Media and the FIA have announced a sensational “Return to Heritage” initiative, axing several proposed high-fee street circuits to bring back iconic traditional tracks starting in 2026.
Following overwhelming fan feedback and driver complaints regarding “Mario Kart-style” street circuits, F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali confirmed the sport is prioritizing high-speed, flowing, permanent circuits to better showcase the new 2026 technical regulations.
The Return of the Titans
The biggest news, set for an official announcement at the upcoming Miami Grand Prix, is the confirmation that Kyalami Racing Circuit in South Africa and the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve (Portimão) in Portugal are returning to the schedule by 2027.
- Portimão (Portugal): Returning for a two-year deal in 2027 and 2028, the “Algarve Rollercoaster” is viewed as a high-downforce challenge that perfectly suits the upcoming 2026 regulations.
- Kyalami (South Africa): After years of rumors, the South African GP is officially back, offering a high-altitude challenge that tests both engine reliability and driver stamina.
Hockenheimring Squeezes In
Fans looking for German engineering on home soil have reason to celebrate. Amidst the news that the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort will drop off the calendar after 2026, Hockenheimringhas entered advanced talks to return to the calendar, potentially sharing a date with Spa-Francorchamps in 2027.
“We heard the fans,” a senior FIA source told F1 Insider. “While the street circuits bring glamour, the soul of F1 is at places like Spa, Suzuka, and Monza. We are trying to find a better balance, ensuring we don’t only race in city centers”.
Drivers Rejoice
Reigning champion Lando Norris and rival Max Verstappen have been vocal critics of the rapid expansion of street racing.
“It’s what we want,” said one anonymous team principal. “Driving these complex 2026 cars on a track with gravel traps and proper fast corners is a different discipline. It separates the men from the boys.”
The 2026 calendar is already showing this shift, with the return of several traditional venues making it a season that bridges the gap between the new hybrid power era and the classic charm of the 1970s and 80s.
2026 Provisional “Traditional” Additions:
- European Swing: Focusing on Spa-Francorchamps, Monza, and a return to Hockenheim.
- Portugal/Africa: Portimão and Kyalami holding high-speed slots in the autumn
