Lando Norris has officially declared his intention to claim the coveted No.1 plate for the 2026 Formula One season, boldly taking over the number long associated with Max Verstappen. After years of running with his signature No.4, the newly crowned world champion is embracing the privilege reserved exclusively for the reigning titleholder.
The McLaren star explained that adopting the No.1 is more than a personal choice—it is a symbolic reward for the collective dedication of his entire team. He emphasised that the number represents tradition, triumph, and the shared pride of every mechanic and engineer who contributed to his championship run.
Norris admitted that although No.4 had become part of his identity, the allure and heritage of the champion’s number were impossible to ignore. He noted that choosing No.1 allows the whole McLaren camp to celebrate their achievement with greater visibility, joking that “being number four” simply doesn’t carry the same glory.
His announcement comes as Formula One prepares for a regulatory shift in 2026, with new rules permitting drivers to change their race numbers annually. Although racers have been tied to fixed numbers since 2014, they will now have the freedom to adopt any unclaimed digit at the start of each season—a change that would have forced Verstappen to adjust regardless.
With Verstappen no longer champion, his previous number options remain open, including his longtime favourite, No.3, formerly used by Daniel Ricciardo. As the sport heads into a transformative season, Norris’ decision to take No.1 adds an extra layer of symbolism to his ascent and signals a new era for McLaren’s resurging ambitions.
