A devastating accident has claimed the life of racing driver Juha Miettinen during the 24 Hours of Nürburgring Qualifiers on Saturday. The fatal incident occurred in the opening race of the event, casting a dark shadow over what was meant to be a competitive weekend of endurance racing.
The four-hour race had only been underway for a short period before disaster struck. With over three hours still remaining, officials halted proceedings after a serious crash unfolded at the Steilstrecke section of the iconic Nürburgring Nordschleife. The collision happened near a tight hairpin just before the Karussell, a notoriously challenging part of the track.
According to race officials, the crash involved seven vehicles, prompting immediate red-flag conditions as emergency crews rushed to the scene. While no live footage of the impact was broadcast, onboard visuals later revealed the chaotic aftermath. Driver Misha Charoudin, who was directly behind the incident, described how fluid on the track may have triggered the pile-up at high speed, leaving little room for drivers to react.
Later that evening, confirmation emerged that Miettinen, who was behind the wheel of a BMW 325i, had succumbed to his injuries despite urgent medical efforts. Reports indicated he passed away at the circuit’s medical centre after resuscitation attempts proved unsuccessful. Fortunately, the six other drivers involved were treated for injuries but were not in life-threatening condition.
